Central Park Wander Part I

One of my first wanders when I arrived in New York was in Central Park (late September 2008). I had just moved into a studio apartment on the Upper East Side, just 4 blocks from the park.
In my hometown on Saint John there is a beautiful park called Rockwood Park, which was designed by the same Downing Vaux from the Central Park design team.

Click here for the wander map.

I started my wander at the 79th street entrance and headed south to the Boat Basin:

Just north of the Conservatory Water is this Alice in Wonderland bronze sculpture, which, from what I can tell, is the most popular thing for children to play on in the park. I was quite shocked that parents still let their kids play on this statue, unpadded as it is and all.

I love the little tunnels with the overgrown vegetation all over the park:

I walked north toward the Lake. Here's the the Angel of the Waters Fountain on Bethesda Terrace next to the Lake:

From the Terrace I walked south down The Mall and Literary Walk:
I love these views of the park with the skyscrapers in the background. I took this picture from the rocks above Wollman rink, looking southwest. Its a fantastic contrast of nature and the city.

The Carousel.

I walked west along the southern part of the park and then turned north again. I arrived at Sheep Medow with the San Remo Apartments in the background:
